Hi everyone!
The search for our National and Local Ambassadors for the Network of Strength Walk to Empower is on.
Who do you walk for? Tell us why you walk and how your life has been impacted by breast cancer at http://www.beeatthewalk.com for the chance to represent our community and meet the leadership of Breast Cancer Network of Strength on an all expense-paid trip to Chicago for the Walk to Empower this Mother’s Day. In addition, 13 Local Ambassadors will be selected to lead the walk in their home city and receive a Flip video camera! | Matters of the Heart, Body, and Mind |
We love that February is about keeping your heart full and healthy by honoring the people in your support system. Your sweetheart, your family, and your close friends are a major part of your happiness and well being, so show them you care by staying fit and healthy. Then you can be there for them, too. February is also officially heart health month, so we’ll help you keep yours beating strong with nutrition and fitness advice for optimal cardiovascular wellness.
With this in mind, some traditional wisdom from 18th century American politician John Andrew Holmes is especially meaningful this month. He said, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.” Remember that with each step you take towards your own personal goals, logging your miles helps raise money to lift others up through the support of Breast Cancer Network of Strength. Strong hearts are big hearts!
Be sure to check in on Facebook and Twitter this month for more tips, a Valentine’s Day contest to share with us what you love, and other fun challenges and giveaways to keep you motivated to work toward your fitness goals.
See you out there!

| Winter exercise excuses busted! |
Winter presents obstacles to regular exercise goals no matter where you live. Shorter days, inclement weather, and crazy holiday schedules are notorious motivation killers. But they don’t have to be! Here are some ways to see the winter elements as seasonal fitness opportunities. Bring on the positive changes and remember to log your miles!
Rethinking Winter Fitness
Training obstacle 1. I can’t regularly exercise after work because it gets dark too early, and I get bored of the treadmill
Check out Coach Jenny’s treadmill tips - (http://ow.ly/BWpC). We’re pretty sure you won’t be bored anymore! Alternatively, log miles on a stationary bike, or swim laps and record your distances. Try mixing it up to keep it fresh and interesting! Every step you take ensures that you stay motivated and ready to reach new goals once nature is more accommodating.
2.I don’t belong to a gym and can’t run/walk around my neighborhood anymore because of the snow/cold/dark.
Actually, according to the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health, just 15 minutes of snow shoveling counts as moderate physical activity. Think about it: Shoveling and then a rewarding walk as a result of your efforts is actually one workout that you can only get during the precipitous winter months! Too dark too soon? Walk at lunch! The day is at its brightest and the roads around businesses are usually well maintained. Bring your colleagues along to make it even more fun!
3. Holiday plans throw me off – I can’t ditch my family/friends for a work out.
Don’t ditch them, bring them along! A long walk is low impact and is a wonderful way to catch up—along with the long list of health benefits, low intensity physical activity sets the perfect context for a long conversation. Being active together could be the best gift you give your family or friends this holiday season.
Here are some other pedometer-friendly activities that you can do with your whole family:
- Make sure every member of your family gets in on the action. Your canine companion would like nothing better than to spend time with you, and your dog-walking miles count! - Holiday gift shopping. Ever thought about how much you actually walk around the mall? You might be surprised. Whether you log one mile or six (depending on your shopping endurance), we want to know! - A post-family dinner stroll around the neighborhood. This fun and healthy tradition adopted by families nationwide could be yours to keep! From Madison Avenue to the Santa Monica pier, a walk around your town is a great way to involve your family in your fitness goals, and have a great time logging miles.
We would love to hear your suggestions!
