One of my favorite organizations is the Rails to Trails Conservancy.  It is a nonprofit organization, whose mission it is to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people.  Since 1986, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has helped transform more than 15,000 miles of unused railroad corridor throughout the United States into the world’s greatest running and walking trail system for you to enjoy.  It's not only a wonderfully green initiative, it is helping keep America fit too! 

Whether you are looking for a new running or walking route in your area, or an adventurous place to take the family on your next vacation, you can easily find a Rails-to-Trails route in any state using TrailLink.com.  Traillink is a free service from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and includes access to trail descriptions, photos, reviews, maps and blogs. 

The trails are relatively flat (no more than 3% grade), scenic and can go for miles.  Many of the rail trails are marked for mileage and offer a variety of terrain including crushed limestone, dirt and asphalt.  There is nothing better than walking, hiking or running on a trail away from traffic.  It sooths your soul and calms the spirit.  You can even make an active vacation on the trail.  One summer while going to college in Western Michigan, my friends and I rode our bikes nearly 35 miles to South Haven (off Lake Michigan) and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast.  We enjoyed the beach, a few nice meals and then rode back to campus Sunday morning.  It's the perfect active vacation and a wonderful way to learn about the region and the history of the railway system.
