Q:  I'm active, but my husband isn't.  Do you have any tips to help encourage him to get moving?  Thanks Jane

Hi Jane.   As the old adage says, you an lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.  Although you can't make him move, there are a lot of clever ways to encourage him to get started.  Walking is one of the easiest ways to get started on an exercise program because it is a part of our ever day life.  Set aside some time to walk the neighborhood together and keep it simple.  A few 10-15 minute walks every week is a perfect opportunity to discuss the happenings of the day and get in healthy activity too.  Wear a pedometer and track your steps during the day.  Talk about the importance of getting in at least 10,000 per day.  Maybe that will intrigue him to evaluate his steps.  Set up a team challenge with your friends.  Walk a certain number of miles in six weeks, or steps in a day.  Have an achievable goal, a few realistic rules and a fun way to celebrate at the end.  The combination of a challenging and interesting goal with the support and comarederie of friends can make a lasting impression and be the stepping stone to continued activity down the road.  The key is to gently guide him along the way.

Happy Trails,
Coach Jenny Hadfield
