Good morning. I ran the RockNRoll LasVegas Marathon in December and I have a half marathon in Moab, UT in March. I can't seem to find the motivation and commitment to train for this March race. Is this normal to feel drained and run down post marathon (it was my first). I'm frustrated that i can't get my excitement back. It is snowy and cold here and I have been doing 3 miles on the treadmill. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time. Kathie
Hi Kathie-
It is normal for your motivation to fluctuate a bit, especially this time of year and after completing a marathon. Marathon training and completing the event is taxing. It is always wise to take time after the event to recover and run for fun. It gives your mind time off fromt eh structure of the demands of the program and your body some recovery time from the impact.
I would consider setting a new goal later in the spring to give yourself some time to run for the fun of it, rather than another structured program. Perhaps a 10K in March instead? Then a half in June, when the weather breaks and you have more quality outdoor time to train. Also consider alternating your running days with cross-training activities like cycling, Pilates, climbing or strength training. Doing so will provide a much needed break from the repetition of doing the same workout. You could get creative and add a little spice to your routine by running easy for 3 miles one day, then cycling for 30 minutes and strength training the next. You’ll use a wider variety of muscles, stimulate your motivation and have a solid plan for the next few months.
Happy Trails,
Coach Jenny
