One of the best things about nutrition is that no matter what your initial inspiration (losing weight, lowering cholesterol or blood pressure, or having more energy), when you begin making healthful changes to your diet and lifestyle, you see many benefits, inside and out.

As fall gets into full swing, schedules get settled, and the holidays approach, we want to highlight the fact that good nutrition can help you feel AND look better.  Each week this month we’ll be blogging about nutrition tips that not only make it fun, tasty, and easy to eat better... but they can tame tummy bloat and improve your skin’s appearance and health as well.  Here’s a little glimpse of what’s to come….

Tummy tamer:  Although bloating, gas, and other uncomfortable symptoms can sometimes be caused by specific foods, one of the most common culprits is eating too much at once.  We’ve had clients come in thinking that they have IBS or other potential digestive disorders, only to find out that their symptoms disappear once they cut back to smaller more frequent meals and more appropriate portion sizes.

Healthy skin:  Did you know selenium protects skin elasticity and protects against sun damage?  It’s a fantastic nutrient that you can get from very healthful foods (get your selenium from food not supplements…supplements have been shown to be dangerous for people at high risk of certain skin cancers).  Get your daily dose of selenium by including foods like tuna, crab, oysters, shrimp, cod, tilapia, lean beef, turkey, brown rice, whole wheat products (bread, pasta, crackers, etc.), eggs, mushrooms, fat free cottage cheese into your diet.

Tis the season: Get seasonal with pumpkin to provide a hefty dose of vitamin A (beta carotene).  This fall favorite can be mixed into smoothies or oatmeal, or even used as a fat replacement when baking.  In addition to being delicious, pumpkin’s vitamin A helps growth and repair of body tissues and might protect against sun damage.
