Tina HaupertAre we lucky or what? We got to chat with Tina Haupert, who is the lovely woman behind the blog Carrots ‘n’ Cake. This blog is one of our favorites for many reasons — not least of which is Tina’s straightforward and fun attitude towards making healthy choices a part of everyday life. We also love reading Carrots ‘n’ Cake for recipes, meal and snack ideas, descriptions of Tina’s adventures, and, of course, pictures of her adorable pug, Murphy. Read on for some motivation tips straight from Tina to you.

Willow & Stephanie: You’ve written a lot recently about your newfound love of CrossFit workouts. What about them encourages working out consistently for you?

Tina Haupert: What I love about CrossFit is that it is never the same workout twice. Sure, there are a number of exercises you see in the workouts again and again, but you do them in various quantities and mixed with other exercises. Plus, you’re always trying to get faster and stronger with these moves, so every workout is a challenge.

W&S: Summer is upon us (Yay!).  How do your food choices change as spring turns to summer?

TH: Lighter and brighter! I tend to eat more salads, fresh fruit, smoothies, and “grill-ables” (lean protein and veggies).

W&S: What is one thing that indicates to you “I’m getting off-track with my healthy choices”? What’s your go-to way to get back on track?

TH: I’d say just a general blah feeling and knowing that I’m not making the healthiest choices. To get myself back on track, I forget about the past and make my very next meal nutritious.

W&S: What do you look forward to most in the summertime, food-wise?

TH: Almond Joy ice cream, fresh berries, Skinny Piña Coladas, and dining outside whenever I have the chance.

W&S: Your husband and your pug are major parts of your life (and blog). How do Mal and Murphy affect your motivation and consistency?

TH: They’re both super active, so they keep me motivated to get moving every single day.

W&S: Many people are more motivated to work out and eat healthfully in the summer because they want to be “swimsuit ready”. How do you make this summer attitude towards exercise and healthy eating a year-round state of mind?

TH: Working out and eating healthy is really part of who I am. When I lost weight and improved my habits many years ago, I vowed to make permanent lifestyle changes, which were never part of a “diet” for me, so I continue to do these things year-round.

We hope you head on over to Carrots ‘n’ Cake now and browse Tina’s adventures and recipes.

How do you know when you’re getting off-track…and how do you get yourself back on track again?
