Ready? Go Green!

Making an effort to “go green” can seem a daunting task – kind of like losing weight! But just like dropping those pounds, going green begins just one step at a time. If we each do one or two simple things consistently, like taking reusable bags to the grocery store or recycling at home, it makes a recognizable impact.

Many environmentally aware consumers have not only made changes in their personal lives, but also seek out like-minded businesses, especially restaurants. As an industry, restaurants have made great strides in the corporate social responsibility arena.

At Arch Rock Fish, my restaurant in Santa Barbara, we also make an effort to do our part. We separate and recycle all of our glass and aluminum, collect our cooking oil and recycle that as well, and partner with a certified green linen company.

Additionally, the majority of the vendors that we purchase from are in the Santa Barbara area, therefore reducing our carbon footprint and, in turn, supporting our community.

What are some simple things that you can do to “go green?”

  • Keep reusable shopping bags in your car for not only trips to the grocery store, but for other shopping needs as well.
  • Place a recycling bin directly next to your trash can. This helps to remind you to keep your recyclables separate from your waste.
  • Keep it local. When possible, support local business and farmers, like the kind you find at your neighborhood farmer’s market. This reduces the carbon footprint created in the effort it takes to get products to you.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle. There’s usually access to drinking water most everywhere you go, so there’s no need to purchase bottled water (this saves you money, too)

Happy Greening!
